Banks
Both local and international banks are represented by branches in Dubai and provide the usual commercial banking services. Transfers can be made without difficulty as there is no exchange control and the dirham is freely convertible.
Bank opening hours:
Saturday to Wednesday 08:00 - 13:00 (some also open between 16.30–18.30)
Thursdays 08:00 - 12:00
Credit Cards
American Express, Diners Club, Visa, MasterCard, etc are generally accepted in the main hotels and larger shops but some retailers offer better bargains for cash.
Tipping
Tipping practices are similar to most parts of the world. Some restaurants include service; otherwise 10 per cent is adequate.
Business Hours
The weekend in Dubai is on Friday and Saturday
Government offices are open from 7.30 – 13.30 (7.30 –12.00 on Thursday).
Most shops remain open until 21.00 –22.00.
Department stores, boutiques, souqs and many food shops remain open on a Friday
Embassies and consulates are generally open from 8.45–12.30 and are closed on Fridays and in most cases on Saturdays, but usually leave an emergency number on their answering machines.
Newspapers
English-language newspapers are Gulf News, Khaleej Times, Emirates News, The National, The Times (Middle East edition) and The Gulf Today.
Arabic newspapers include Al-Bayan, Al-Ittihad and Al-Khaleej.
